A Lifetime on Foot: The Man Who Walked Across the Planet Returns to Hull
After nearly three decades spent traversing the globe, Karl Bushby has finally stepped back onto the streets of his hometown in northern England. The 57-year-old adventurer returned to Hull this week, marking the end of an epic odyssey that spanned roughly 31,000 miles. In an emotional scene outside his mother’s terraced house, Bushby was greeted by his family and a cheering crowd under a handmade welcome home banner, jokingly asking those gathered if the long wait was finally over.
What began as a daring quest in 1998 started in Punta Arenas, Chile, where Bushby set off with little more than a tent and a handful of dollars. His mission was simple yet grueling: return home via an unbroken route without ever relying on motorized transport. This commitment led him through the suffocating humidity of the Darien Gap, across the treacherous ice of the Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia, and throughout the vast landscapes of Mongolia and China. Even water offered no shortcut, as he eventually swam across both the Caspian Sea and the English Channel to complete his passage.
The journey proved far more difficult than originally anticipated, stretching from an estimated twelve years into twenty eight. Along the way, Bushby battled bureaucratic nightmares including detention in Russia and constant visa disputes. Financial stability also vanished during the 2008 global economic crash when several major sponsors withdrew their support. Despite these setbacks, he persevered through isolation and exhaustion to achieve one of the most ambitious walking feats in history.
Reflecting on his arrival, Bushby credited his success not to personal strength alone but to the overwhelming generosity of people worldwide. He remarked that while it usually takes a village to raise a child, it took an entire planet to bring him home, citing the countless strangers and nations that helped him navigate foreign lands. As he settles back into civilian life in England, Bushby will share his story through upcoming public speaking engagements and a feature length documentary currently in production.
